Having been involved in canvassing for around three years and developing a system through trial and error I became burned out and took a leave of absence.
A very good friend of mine who had been involved in the roofing industry for most of his life had always wanted to be his own boss by starting his own roofing company. He was tired of working for other people.
Two years ago he was diagnosed with cancer and the doctors didn’t have much hope for a recovery. I spent hours with him in the hospital as he was going through chemotherapy. To keep his hopes up we would discuss what we were going to do once he was rid of the cancer.
We often spoke of him starting his own roofing company and we talked about it as a way to keep up his spirits. I told him that if and when he got well he could start his own company and I would help him get started by doing some canvassing for him.
After 8 months of treatment, the doctors were impressed with the outcome. The cancer was no longer a threat to his health for he was now in remission.
That spring as I had promised I began canvassing for a totally unknown company. He had little sales training for he had always been on the production side of the industry, however his technical understandings must have been enough to do the trick because he started to close most of the appointments he ran.
By the time fall came around he already had a two month backlog and was looking to add on even more crews to install the products.
He did almost $700,000 his first year. Even he had no idea that so much could be done with canvassing.
When he called me with his companies final yearly sales figures, it hit me that I was on to something with my canvassing program. The fact that I could take an unheard of company and generate enough leads to create almost a half million in sales told me that this could be done with any company having even better results with companies that were known in the area.
After all was said and done for the year and including the bonuses he had given me in the way of gratitude, his lead cost from my program came in at 2.5%
