Why Canvassing is the best kept secret in advertising

Canvassing has been around since the first person in history had something they wanted to sell. Anyone with a product on the market they want sold needs to be able to get into contact with those they believe are in need of that product.

The main problem Business Owners run into when starting a canvassing program is getting it off the ground and running. This can, at times be made more difficult than it really is. To make a program more complicated than it needs to be, or even too intricate, can make the process become an uphill battle from the beginning. This does not need to be the case.

All anyone needs to start a canvassing program is to have the people who will be out canvassing. Keep in mind these people should be properly trained and benchmarked to insure performance, but even that can be a judgment call. An idiot can trip over one lead each day, (if they are banging on doors).

During the years I have been involved in canvassing, I have had seen those properly trained, as well as those who on their first day as a canvasser have the ability to set appointments at the front door. Your estimators will always have appointments to run. A smile works almost as well as a refined pitch, and the ability to overcome a few objections.

Don’t get me wrong processes do make the job easier to perform, and you will see higher lead counts, but any contractor who wants to start generating a steady stream of low cost, high quality leads where both decision makers are present, and who fit into their target market demographics, can achieve this starting on their very first day in the street.

In 2002 the Supreme Court ruled that no state or municipality could restrict anyone from canvassing. The most they could do was having them register and perhaps pay for a permit. The best thing about canvassing is that it can be completely customized to fit any company’s needs. As an example installers can be canvassers. They are already in a neighborhood installing one of the products your company offers, they could easily knock on the door of any neighbor where a need has been noticed and offer them the opportunity to get a solution to the problem pointed out. This would only take five minutes and they would be back to work installing their product. You could offer a wide variety of bonuses or spiff's depending on your current lead cost.

Estimators can be canvassers. After being finished with their appointment, they could take the next five minutes to knock on the two doors on either side of the prospect they just visited.

Then we have the door-to-door Canvasser. The person who makes a living setting appointments for Estimators to pitch their products. This person has a procedure they follow at each door. They have a honed pitch and are able to overcome any objection. This person has great presentation skills, as well as some product knowledge and keeps a strict schedule. This person will be the greatest advertising tool your company will have in it‘s Marketing Department.

They operate in the neighborhoods of those that not only have a need for what you have to offer, but those most likely able to afford you as well. They point out any potential problems to homeowners, getting them to step out of the house to verify any problem when they can. They build creditability and establish a rapport with the homeowner differentiating you from your competition.

This can be done by anyone, in any City and State in the Nation. You just have to decide you are going to start a canvassing program.
